Rome 2025: Best Historical Spots & Affordable Food You Must Try

If someone were to ask me which city stays with you long after the trip is over, my answer would be Rome . When I visited Rome in early 2025, I didn’t expect the city to feel so vibrant —ancient streets, heartwarming local food, friendly people, and a sense of history in the air! I had heard countless stories about Rome, but experiencing it firsthand was something completely different. This trip wasn’t just about seeing the sights; it was about experiencing what it felt like to be Roman .

In this comprehensive blog, I’m sharing my personal journey through Rome—the city’s historic gems, affordable eateries, and the little experiences that made my trip memorable forever.

Rome’s First Magic: When History Came Alive

As I exited Roma Termini station, I felt like the city was a perfect blend of ‘old’ and ‘new.’ Tall historic buildings stood before me, and just below them, the aroma of fresh espresso wafted from a modern café.

I remember putting down my backpack, looking at the architecture, and thinking, “If a history book came alive, this is what it would smell like.” This city wasn’t quiet and still like a museum; it was a moving, breathing story.

Despite Rome being a popular tourist destination, I felt no rush. People were relaxed, and the weather was beautiful like spring. I noticed that every little street, every stone, and every arch bore the imprint of past centuries. This first impression was to set the tone for my entire trip.

Travel back in time: Rome’s historical gems and experiences

1. The Colosseum – A Walk Through Ancient Glory

No matter how many times you see the Colosseum in pictures, the real view is unmatched.

I arrived at the Colosseum early in the morning. Sunlight fell on its magnificent stone arches. I paused for a moment and simply stared at it—it seemed unreal in size and grandeur . Once inside, I found myself in the middle of the arena. When the guide recounted the stories of the gladiators and the roar of the 50,000 spectators who flocked to the arena, the thought sent shivers down my spine . This wasn’t just a ruin; it had witnessed some of the most dramatic moments in human history.

My personal hack: Get a combo ofColosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hilltickets online. This covers all three sites, and you avoid long ticket lines.

2. The Roman Forum – Where real history was made

Just a few minutes’ walk from the Colosseum, the Roman Forum felt like a veritable open-air museum , no less than a park. Here, I spent about three hours wandering among the ruins of ancient streets, the Arch of Titus, and temples. I saw how this was once the center of ancient Rome’s administrative, religious, and social life. My favorite activity was sitting near a crumbling column and imagining the hustle and bustle of ancient Rome . The Roman Forum reminded me how deeply Rome is connected to its past.

3. Vatican City – Center of Art and Faith

A visit to Vatican City is a must, and I tried to beat the crowds by going early in the morning, which was successful.I was amazed by the magnitude and intricate craftsmanship of St. Peter’s Basilica . Getty Images The ceilings, the artwork, the statues, and the play of light—every corner held an artistic marvel. This wasn’t just a church, but a testament to humanity’s creativity.

The experience of the Sistine Chapel is beyond words. The room was silent, and I looked up at Michelangelo ‘s world-famous masterpiece. The moment was so powerful that it felt as if time had stopped. I remember not wanting to leave.

4. Trevi Fountain – Desires and Romance

The Trevi Fountain was even more beautiful than I expected, especially at night.

I revisited it at night, when the fountain’s white marble statues glowed in golden light. It was crowded, but I felt a calm, romantic energy. I closed my eyes and, as is tradition, threw a coin over my left shoulder . What I wished for remains a secret, but the magic of that moment will stay with me.

Rome on a Budget: Affordable & Delicious Food

Food in Rome can be expensive, but if you eat wisely , it’s also very affordable.

My top food picks that saved money:

  1. Pizza al Taglio: This was my main course. Pizza is sold by the slice and can also be ordered by weight. I had a great slice for €3.50 at a small shop near the hostel.
  2. Supplì – My evening snack: These were fried, mozzarella-stuffed rice balls. For just €1.50 , this crispy snack was my energy source throughout my city exploration.
  3. Authentic Carbonara: I had the best carbonara of my life for €11 at an old, unpretentious restaurant in Trastevere . The rule is: stay away from tourist traps and eat in small, family-friendly places.
  4. Gelato Rule: I looked for gelato shops that served gelato in containers rather than stacked high—this often indicates better quality. A double scoop for €3 was perfect.
  5. Coffee at the Bar: My favorite experience was drinking coffee like the locals. Stand at the counter of any bar (café) and drink an espresso, and it’ll only cost €1.50 . Sitting down doubles the price.

Getting Around Rome: Transport & Savings

Rome is incredibly walkable . I averaged 12,000 to 15,000 steps a day, saving a lot of taxi money. When I had to travel long distances, the metro was my best friend.

  • Fares: A single ticket (BIT) cost around €1.50 , and was valid for 100 minutes.
  • Tips: I didn’t buy a Rome Pass . I just bought tickets as needed, as most of my days were centered around the Colosseum and the Vatican.
